The 4M2, with its massive 8TB capacity and fast speeds is particularly apt for video editing workflows.

When setting up the 4M2, OWC recommends using its SoftRAID utility for the best overall performance. If the system is to be installed under wood flooring, ensure 10mm of Self levelling compound is used. This limits the speed of each blade to about 950 MB/s and limits the total number of SSD blades to four (one for each PCIe channel). The fan could be quieter, and there’s room for the more ubiquitous 80mm fan size which would be quieter and provide even better cooling.Software RAID gives you increased power and control over your RAID drives and disks that hardware RAID can’t deliver and doesn’t lock you into technology that you can’t upgrade or expand. The company notes that unlike hardware-only solutions, SoftRAID allows for better performance, multi-enclosure capability, advanced drive monitoring, e-notifications and downloadable updates. I’ve read that (at least) two Thunderblades can be set as a single RAID, but only if each is on a different Thunderbolt bus line—I currently have a pair of 4M2s but have not had a chance to test this. Install the SSDs, plug the unit into wall power using a small power brick, connect it to a Thunderbolt port and you are ready to format it.
